Minneapolis photographer Joe Krummel and his expectant wife Leela invited 30 friends and family over for brunch and a gender reveal party for their new baby. The idea was simple—they’d open a big cardboard box sitting on the lawn, and out would pop either a bunch of blue balloons for a boy, or pink balloons for a girl.
Piece of cake, right? Except that it so wasn’t. Because when the couple excitedly opened the pink-and-blue-polka-dotted box to reveal their fortune, they were greeted by a half-dozen rainbow-hued balloons that actually revealed nothing—uh oh! The crowd erupted in nervous laughter, but neither Joe nor Leela could hide their disappointment.
“What the f#$@,” the expectant dad exclaimed, throwing up his hands in frustration. His wife, meanwhile, was clearly distraught and looked like she was about to burst into tears. (We SO don’t blame you, Leela!)
So what went wrong? According to a post shared by Joe on Facebook, there was a screw-up at the party store (and something tells us that whoever was responsible is totally getting fired).

But in the end, all’s well that ends well. Because after conducting a little recon, a friend of Joe’s found a card buried at the bottom of the box that revealed the baby’s gender and, according to Inside Edition, he packed that sucker back up so the Krummels could give the whole thing a second try.
This time, the reveal went off without a hitch, and the happy couple cheered in celebration as a bunch of blue balloons came drifting out of the box to let them know they were having a boy.
