Baby Care Basics: Baby Accidents | Parents

As much as we all try to prepare our homes for Baby, accidents still happen. Here are three common accidents and what to do if they happen.

Even if your house is baby-proofed from floor to ceiling, at some point, your curious little one will get hurt. It’s just part of growing up. And when that happens, my biggest piece of advice is stay calm. One of the most common baby accidents is a head bump from a fall. If your baby loses consciousness, call an ambulance. Otherwise, wrap an ice pack in a cloth and hold it on the bump, and watch her like a hawk for the next 24 hours. Call your doctor if she starts vomiting, won’t stop crying, seems lethargic or excessively sleepy, if her pupils change, or if she simply isn’t acting like herself. If you’re unsure, call your doctor. Burns or scalds can also happen. Run cool water over the area until the pain subsides. Don’t put anything else on it unless your doctor instructs you to do so. Call your doctor if the burn covers a large area, is on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or if it starts to blister. With any eye trauma, hold a cool, wet cloth over the area. Head to the ER if your baby seems in pain, seems bothered by light, or if her eyes won’t stop tearing. If you think your baby has ingested a poisonous substance, immediately call Poison Control, at 800-222-1222. Post this number on your refrigerator and store it in your phone. There are many other types of accidents, of course. If you’re not sure what to do, just call your doctor. That what we’re here for.
